Elementary school: proof we’re making a positive impact
Recent results from evaluations of tobacco use prevention programs for youth in grades 3-7 prove these efforts are having a positive impact. Students from 11 Northwest Ohio counties were tested before and after participating in four curricula: Life Skills Training, Project Alert, Stamp and Word of Mouth.

Elementary School Findings

Up: self-efficacy, the personal resolve to abstain from smoking.
- 98% said it was not okay for kids their age to smoke.
- 90% never used tobacco.
- 50% lived with someone who smoked.

8% tried smoking before age 12.

Program parameters: Of 4,879 participants in the intervention group, 98% completed surveys. The comparison group included 893 students; 84% complete surveys. The average age was 10.7 years old. The respondents were 75% white, 50% female.
