Elementary School: Post-Tests Positive, But Controls Are, Too
In the program evaluation highlights for Year 3, elementary school students (grades 4-6) in the intervention group had positive changes on 5 of 6 subscales from pretest to post-test. However, the control group students also changed in positive ways over time. So, when the intervention group was compared to the control group, only one change was statistically significant: perceived social norms.
Elementary School Findings
Up – more students firmly intend to avoid smoking in adulthood.
Up – students have stronger skills for resisting offers from older kids.
Down – the perception that smokers are more popular or have more friends.
No increase in the frequency of smokeless tobacco use.
52% of the kids lived with smokers.
Program parameters: Of 4,881 participants, 4,529 (93%) in the intervention group matched pre- and post-test surveys. The average age was 10.9 years old. The respondents were 78% white, 51% male. There were 767 in the control group.
