Middle and High School Students: Maintaining Pretest Levels
Year 3 post-testing of students in grades 7-12 showed that even when there’s no change the results can be positive. In this case, that’s because there were no increases in the use of smokeless and other forms of tobacco (such as cigars), or in how often students were offered tobacco during the previous 30-day period. In addition, increases were seen in areas such as students’ resistance skills and their resolve to be smoke-free 5 years down the road.
Middle and High School Findings
Up – self-efficacy, the personal resolve to abstain from smoking.
Down – the number of students who believe smoking is cool.
86% had not been offered any form of tobacco in the last 30 days.
97% indicated breathing secondhand smoke is “probably” or “definitely” harmful.
17% were in the same room with a smoker for all 7 days the previous week.
Program parameters: There were 1,212 participants; 82% were in junior high. The average age was 13.2 years old. The respondents were 86% white, 52% male. There was no control group.
